An email just this afternoon pointed me to the press release that Globe Telecom has agreed with Apple to exclusively offer the iPhone in the Philippines. Announcement was made at 1PM this afternoon.

On the Globe Corporate site:

Globe, SingTel, Bharti Airtel and Optus to bring iPhone to the region

Manila, 12 May 2008 – Globe, SingTel, Bharti Airtel and Optus today announced that they have signed an agreement with Apple to bring the iPhone to the Philippines, Singapore, India, and Australia later this year.

More information will be released at a later date.

Finally!

A call to people inside Globe turned out nothing. They’re all mum about it. Not even a clue. All they told me is that it will be offered later this year. That’s it. No details on the plans, prices and release dates. Will have to dig deeper. *bleh*

Wait, does that mean Apple will open up iTunes in the Philippines as well? Remember that Apple ties up your iTunes account with your iPhone subscription. But iPhones are already available in the Philippines. Just visit Virramall in Greenhills. Now, I’m more excited with the prospect of getting an iTunes account than an iPhone being legitimately available with a local telco.

Will the iPhone muster enough influence to make people switch providers? (That’s what happened with AT&T in the US.)

Smart Telecom is one of the most popular telecommunication here in the Philippines. They provide nation wide service here in the Philippines. I’ve stated to use a cell phone since 2004 and my first provider is smart I found out at that time that this telecom have great features plus when you’re a new user you have automatically a bonus load to your sim-card after about a month of using this provider Smart Telecom have so many complains about stealing load from your cell phone and I commonly experience it, when I bought about 30 pesos load and after a minute I just only use 5 pesos of that load it gets zero balance. After having complains to the help center they just say just try to turn off your cell phone and turn on after 5 minutes and try to make a balance inquiry , after that they just hang-up and when I do what they say it doesn’t solve anything I just going to call them again and wait minutes before they answer it. I just switch to other provider, they provided me good service but it cost more, at this time I only use my cell phone when its emergency or there’s something important.
